If the applause being received by likely candidates like Mike Huckabee, Senator Ted Cruz, Governor Bobby Jindal, and Ben Carson are any indication the Christian Right are gearing up in preparation for the next Presidential election. The "Powers that be" are encouraging Pastors like never before to become politically active. Having the power and say a united front of church congregations could provide is more important now than ever. A desire for Christian Heritage needs to be restored because failure in electing socially conservative candidates is taking it's toll. Will evangelicals be up to the task?
Where the rubber meets the road....
I have personally never been a big fan of pastors delving into the realm of politics. It wasn't so much the idea of separation of church and state but I realized Christians disagree about what the Bible says so Politics would never promote harmony thus hindering His Kingdom. For Christians, especially pastors it's about Christ and spreading the Gospel not about influencing who someone's voting for.
However I am beginning to change my mind, at least a little. Our Country is broken! Although I still don't approve of politics being discussed from the pulpit I do believe pastors have a right to play a role in the political process as does every American. Reverend King was pivotal in Civil Rights so it has been necessary in our nation's past. History tells us God blesses his people when they follow Him under a Godly leader which is in contrast to Him withdrawing prosperity under ungodly leadership. Hundreds of years ago when people left England so they could worship as He intended God blessed us with the birth of a great nation.
So it is not surprising as we continue to turn away from God our country suffers. We need a Christian President who focuses and trusts in Jesus instead of succumbing to political fears and intimidation. It would be a comfort to me to have a President who I believed truly took his cares to the Lord and was not ashamed to go to seek his guidance for help.
How about you?
